Care & Concern
Caring Ministries are designed to provide opportunities for ministry for those with a passion for helping people. If you're drawn to social issues, aiding those who are suffering, celebrating with those who are rejoicing or contributing the entire health of individuals, these are the ministries for you.
Women Cancer Survivors -
Members of the Women Cancer Survivors Ministry Team are available to offer support and share their experiences with any woman recently diagnosed with cancer.
If you or someone you know would like to talk with a cancer survivor, call June DeWeese, (573) 445-2252; Mary Frances Potter, (573) 443-0256; or Mary Palmatary, (573) 817-2617. If you are a cancer survivor and would like to join this ministry team, please call June DeWeese.
Social Concerns -
This ministry area addresses the hopes and concerns of our community and peoples across the world - hope for peace with justice, environmental survival, and human welfare so that communities may become more loving and just.
During this program year the Commission on Christian Social Concerns will focus on the following themes through which it invites all members of the church to seek growth for social justice and action:
- Homosexuality
- Death and Dying
- Extended Care for Older Adults
- Violence Against Women
- Death Penalty
We acknowledge that John Wesley was clear on the unity of faith and action as we affirm his statement that "The Gospel of Christ knows of no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness."
We are reminded that in the Wesleyan spirit, evangelism and social action are inextricably joined. "The world hears the Gospel when it sees it." We are to enact the "Good News" through our social action.
We believe that every generation of leaders in the Wesleyan tradition must discover anew the meaning of the Wesleyan legacy. This continues to be our task today. We invite all to join us in seeking to learn from Wesleyan principals, practices, and passions.
We pray the community and world will hear and see the Gospel of "Good News" when it is seen through our social holiness and actions.
Open Door Ministry -
The Open Door Ministry was established by parents of gay children and others interested in educating members of the congregation about the realities encountered by families with gay children and in diminishing prejudice against homosexual persons. Participants are seeking to minister to the needs of gays and lesbians and their families and friends.
This group meets the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in room 302. For more information on this subject we offer an extensive list of web sites you can review, a collection of recommended books, places to search for and find material, and a handful of other organizations you may find helpful in the Resources section of our Web site.
Parish Visits
We have many members who are no longer able to be active participants in the programs and worship services at Missouri United Methodist Church. Even though they are home-bound or in a health care facility, our senior members need to have an assurance that we as the Church continue to love them, reflecting the love of Christ by generously participating in monthly visits. We have many folks who are not receiving much attention throughout the year.
If you would like to share the love of Christ by visiting with one of these wonderful saints of the church, please contact David Jones, Minister of Parish Visits, at (573) 443-3111. Please give this your prayerful consideration. It would mean giving about an hour to an hour-and-a-half of your time per month and would bring such joy to the recipients of your visits.
Health Care
- Free blood pressure screenings are offered on the third Sunday of each month
- Medical information cards are kept in the church office for use in emergency situations
- Please fill out a card and return it to the church office
- Red Cross Blood Drives - the weekly Messenger will list the next scheduled blood drive
- Used medical equipment given to the church is available on loan for home use
Flower Ministry
Each week volunteers deliver flowers to those who are hospitalized or in a care center. This ongoing ministry brightens the lives of those who receive these special deliveries.
At present volunteers serve every other month, or possibly every two months, for approximately two hours. For more details or to be a volunteer, call Lynn Fain at (573) 657-2969.
Care Connection
The Care Connection is one of our caring ministries. It was implemented to help MUMC families in times of need, but also offers congratulations on happy events.
Volunteer "links" may serve as needed, while a "connector" is responsible for coordinating the "links" during a one-month period.
