Our Stories

Missouri United Methodist Church is part of the tapestry that is the life of my family. My husband and I were married in the Chapel by Dr. Forsberg.
Our children were baptized at MUMC. For many years we skirted the outside edge of the church not really becoming engaged in the life of the church.
Our son Adam was confirmed and continued to Acolyte. We went to church the majority of Sundays, but were not involved in committees or in the life of the church. All that changed on a winter night in December 2002. That evening Adam, our sixteen year-old son died in a car crash. Jim Bryan came to our grieving household to offer hope and compassion to our family. Dave Jones who knew Adam well and loved him dearly, came to talk to us, to give and receive strength. The cards came from people we did not know, but who knew of us. The strength and peace that comes from prayer began to be felt.
Adam funeral took place in the same sanctuary where he was baptized and he was buried at MUMC. His mortal remains now reside in a place of life and his soul is with God.

Kate is now sixteen and finding her own way as an Acolyte and church member. We are involved in the rich life of the church-getting to know people-offering our gifts of service, money, and prayer. Every time I walk into MUMC I am reminded of my connections to this beautiful place and the sanctuary it gave me at the darkest times of my life. The spirit touched me often as I was on my knees praying in the sanctuary. God would grant me a moment of peace in a pain-filled existence. Each time I walk into the church, I am reminded of the bounty that we have, and our obligation to share that bounty with others who have so little.

God Bless, Lori Popejoy
