Our Stories
The VIM trip to Mozambique in Summer 2007 allowed me to forget the not-so-important details of life for two weeks. Instead, I focused my attention on helping others, experiencing a different culture, and reflecting on my relationship with God. I felt uplifted by the camaraderie among the MUMC team members and those we came to know in Mozambique. Some of my best memories are the evenings we spent in devotion and discussion of the day’s events.
Our team spent eight days working with Habitat for Humanity International to build homes out of local materials for vulnerable families. We participated in every stage of the construction process – from digging post holes to raising the roof to celebrating the dedication of the home with the families. However, I am most proud of the relationships we built and strengthened with the United Methodist Church in Mozambique. We visited MUMC’s covenant partner church, Malhangalene UMC, and it felt like we were worshipping with family.
I have been home for more than two months now, and I know I have been changed by the experience. I worry less, I appreciate the people in my life more, and I am more conscious of the way I conduct myself at home, at work, and in the church. I was welcomed to Mozambique with open arms by people who do not know me and who might never see me again, and I am determined to repay that kindness by becoming a more welcoming person myself.
